…, traveling spontaneously, following the sun or as the whim takes you? Then you can be prepared as good as you want, you occasionally will face the situation of having no availabilities at your favourite destinations. And then what? Potentially a nasty situation but also one which could be full of positive surprises! In any case, your improvisation skills are now required.
In New Zealand a good place to go is one of their Visitor Information Centres, called i-SITE. It’s a great visitor information network with over 80 i-SITEs nationwide, always willing to help with tips, addresses, phone calls, maps and more.
It’s about time to mention the latest two surprises we discovered having been in exactly such a situation: The Sails Motel in Nelson and the Clifftop Cabin in Omau Domain, Cape Foulwind/Westport.
The Sails Motel in Nelson is a new luxury – as they call themselves – motel, just 5 minutes walk from Nelson’s city centre. The rooms are spacious and light, the bathrooms a pleasure with their big walk-in showers; all rooms are fully equipped and including Wifi. The Sails in Nelson is definitely marking itself positively off the regular motel-market!
Like a hidden top prize presented itself the Clifftop Cabin in Omau, 10 minutes drive from Westport, near Cape Foulwind. A gorgeous little bach, over-viewing the cliff and the Tasman Sea. The neighbours and managers, Paddy and Gail Alexander, themselves hosts of their own Clifftop B&B, are very friendly and helpful. The little cabin is a perfect location to explore Cape Foulwind, to visit the seal colony or to enjoy dining at the Bay Cafe or in Westport at the Town House. Apropos, the walkway from the Lighthouse end to the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony is a perfect running course!
