Shortly before we left the “Herdade da Martinha”, we asked Suzanna and Alfredo where to go so as to get the best fresh fish in Vila Nova de Milfontes. The only two recommendations we had so far, were “Tasca do Celso” and “Conversas com Sal”. Both not really dedicated fish restaurants and furthermore only opened for dinner. The “Conversas com Sal” got shut down beginning of the year, clarified the two of them, and the best fish you’ll get definitely in the “A Choupana”, they added.
Their recommendation surprised us a little, because the “A Choupana” was our favourite restaurant in Vila Nova for a long time as well. But the last two times we had fish there, it was grilled all too well and that’s why we felt back on Sao Torpes. A pitty though, because with it’s location and atmosphere the “A Choupana” was simply the cream of the crop at the coast of Vicentina.
However, we used the recommendation from Suzanna and Alfredo as an opportunity to rediscover the “A Choupana” spontaneously – and haven’t been disappointed. Nothing has changed: the location directly on the beach is still unbeatable and the atmosphere of a fisherman’s cottage caused by the old shack still an adventure. This time the fish was served directly from the grill, perfectly cooked and still luscious. With great delight we sat there, enjoying the view over the plate to the main.
The less of a surprise on the contrary was the evening in “Tasca do Celso”. As always it was overcrowded and all tables fully occupied up to the very last chair. The atmosphere was great, the meal as usually delicious and the openly served wine smooth; all in all as ever.
Culinarily we broke new ground the very next day, where we followed a recommendation from the “Casas Brancas”-restaurant guide. The “Restaurante Tapas Bar Ritual” serves beside some typical Portugues plates nearly everything from the “kitchen of the world”: pasta, thai, tandoori and cheese- and hamburgers. As we haven’t been that hungry we decided to go for salad, bruschetta and the fresh goat cheese, everything of fine quality. It’s fun to sit in the “Ritual” and so we decided to come back one day.
